Battle of the Books
Welcome to the Parkway Battle of the Books Page!
What is BOB?
The purpose of the Battle of the Books (BOB) program is to encourage reading by all students who participate. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of children's literature. After reading a list of books, the students then participate in a quiz-bowl-style game where they field questions based on the books they’ve read. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Even during the height of the competition, students and coaches should remember that the goal is to READ, not necessarily to win!
What do we do in BOB?
We read a lot of great books and practice asking questions from those books in order to prepare for competing against the other schools. This year's county competition will be held in March of 2022 (specific date TBD).
What grade do I have to be in?
There are two BOB teams at Parkway. An Elementary (EBOB) team for grades 4-5 and a Middle School (MBOB) team for grades 6-8.
How many books do I have to read?
Currently, EBOB team members have to read a list of 15 books, and MBOB team members have to read a list of 23 books. See the links above for the full lists for 2021-2022.
How do I sign up?
Talk to Mr. Gray! Email him at grayo@wataugaschools.org or call him at Parkway school (264-3032), preferably between 2:30 and 3:30 PM. This won't officially sign you up but it will let me know that you're interested. There will be a meeting sometime at the beginning of the year where we will hand out permission forms and share more information about when practices will be and other important info.
