Student Use of the Library
Students at Parkway come to the library in different ways depending on what grade level they are in.
K-5 students attend weekly classes in the library where they learn how to use the library and gain some research skills. They also hear a number of stories, both fiction and non-fiction, that are geared to spark their imagination or their interest and help to foster a love of reading.
Students in grades 6-8 only come to the library regularly if they have signed up for morning exploratory classes that are taught in the library. Outside of that, they attend the library throughout the school year on an as-needed basis to check out materials or get help with research and homework.
Check-Out Procedures
All students at Parkway are allowed to check out from the library as long as they don't have any lost books that they owe money for.
Students are allowed to have out up to 6 books at one time. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade may check out one book at a time during their weekly library classes but if they forget to bring back their book the following week, they may continue to check out more as long as they don't exceed the limit of 6.
Books are checked out for a period of 3 weeks (21 days) and can be renewed multiple times (either in library class or by contacting Mr. Gray). Most students will return their books during their weekly library classes but books can be returned at any time, 24/7. If the school is closed, use the book return out front.
If a book is not renewed it is marked overdue after three weeks. If it remains overdue for another 3 weeks, it will be marked as lost. At this point, the computer will assess a fine for the lost book and this fine will appear both on the student's Destiny account and in their MySchoolBucks account. The only way to remove the fine is to either return the book or pay the fine (if the book is truly lost). During the 3 weeks that the book is overdue, there are no overdue fines obsessed. You will only be charged if a book is marked as lost.
Books may be placed on hold at any time of the day via the Destiny Online Catalog. They will then be held for students until they come to pick them up from the library. For more info on holds and how to place them, visit the Placing Holds tab on this page.
If a student would like to check out more books, they can come after school with a parent between 2:30-3:30 PM.
